The book is one of the 14 books of Classical Chinese Poetry and Prose. It is a translation of a curated collection of Chinese Song Dynasty Lyrics (SongCi) written in the Song Dynasty (960 CE-1276 CE). Xu Yuan Chong is a professor emeritus of Chinese language and literature at Peking University. The book is divided into two sections, with the English translation as the first section and the original text in Classical Chinese and modern Chinese footnotes are appended right after the English translation in the second section of the book.
